If you wash them you need to cover with mineral oil to make them last the longest. The reason is that when you wash them, you remove the bloom that is a natural barrier on the egg. If you don't wash, it's naturally protected.

Love it!!!!!I've been looking for just the right egg basket for weeks, and was so excited to see this one on clearance at Pier One today! It had a collection of colored citronella candles which I will also use inside.
I love that it is wire, I love that it is blue and I super love the lid to keep my dogs out when I set it down to get distracted by my chickens!

I use a 2 quart berry basket. It is plastic so easy to wash, has a handle and is the right size for my 8 hens daily production.
