Let's see your egg baskets!

If you wash them you need to cover with mineral oil to make them last the longest. The reason is that when you wash them, you remove the bloom that is a natural barrier on the egg. If you don't wash, it's naturally protected.

yeah I know

I know that you don't HAVE to wash the eggs, and even that they will last longer that way.. I just haven't gotten my suburbian alter-ego to accept that yet!!! haha! I was just having that conversation with myself earlier today. Most of my eggs come out pretty clean, so I think that I will stop washing them, except for the ones with poo on them. Thats just going too far! hahahahaha!

I didnt know about the mineral oil, however! Maybe I will get some for those that I just HAVE to wash.

I use a 2 quart berry basket. It is plastic so easy to wash, has a handle and is the right size for my 8 hens daily production.

I've been looking for just the right egg basket for weeks, and was so excited to see this one on clearance at Pier One today! It had a collection of colored citronella candles which I will also use inside.

I love that it is wire, I love that it is blue and I super love the lid to keep my dogs out when I set it down to get distracted by my chickens!

What do you use?

Love it!!!!!

I have a few different baskets that I use, but this one is my favorite. It looks nice on our counter, haha

I got it for a dollar at a tag sale. I also have a few others that I got at the dollar store, they are metal ones. I use those when this one is on display on the counter. I usually only leave the eggs on the counter for a day/ What we don't use in that day, goes into egg cartons in the fridge for people to buy. I don't wash any of our eggs either. If they are so dirty that they have to be washed, then we usually just toss them. But that almost never happens.

I have two exactly the same vinyl covered wire that I picked up at the dollar store and then lined with several pieces of fleece fabric sewn together as a cushion. While I only have 5 hens, I have two small boys who both want the job of bringing in the eggs.
