Lets Talk About Breeding Rabbits!

Quote:
For a good quality angora with good quality wool that sounds about right. They generally average from $80-150 for good wool producers and show rabbits. Pet quality range from 20-50 in price. At least around here.

I breed Champagne d'Argents and Californians. I have about 10 rabbits toatal and I love them. The Champagnes are much calmer than the californians. I show my rabbits and mom eats hers.

Ok, I read through it. I started out thinking that 'breeding like rabbits' was going to turn out to be another one of those urban legends.

Oh that's funny - 'mom eats hers' . I can't say that I've ever aten rabbit. Is there a lot of work involved in raising meat rabbits and then 'doing the needful thing' to eat them? ... just curious

We raise NZ whites for some of the same reasons mentioned in other posts

4H / shows
kids chores / learning responsibilities
and to eat!!

We'll look them over and save the show quality ones, but we're up to almost 50 total in less than 2 years. April 09 we bought a trio (1buck 2does) and a year later we got another buck. When we started, we all sat down and had "the talk" about animals on the farm and what happens to them, so the kids have been REAL good about that part of the deal.

Right now we have 4 litters (9 kits, 7, 4, 4) and they'll be getting ready for freezer camp soon. My BiL and I do all the butchering and we can do 6-8 in an hour. We're starting to get my son involved so he can learn how, but right now he's just the gopher (son go for this and go for that) but he's watching and learning.

As for eating them, we LOVE them, as for the old adage "it taste like chicken", and they do!! We substitute rabbit in recipes that call for chicken all the time. The kid's favorite is Rabbit and noodles, YUM!! We also use it is soups and stews, and even made BBQ rabbit which was good too.

Well it looks like I am going to buy the Giant Angora Rabbit , a 2 year old Doe.

I do want to breed her, at least one litter. Who knows maybe I'll get hooked on breeding rabbits.

Does anyone else breed 'indoor' exotic type rabbits? for shows and stuff?

We've got 10 rabbits and 9 kits so far. All raising for meat for us and sell if anyone wants some. I hope to have them moved into our shed this spring with all new cages and a recirculating/heated water system.

Here's some of the kits... they just started opening their eyes.
