Lets talk about goats!

Hello! I have a Saanen goat who is due with her 5th round of kidding pretty soon. I don't have an exact date because I bought her bred, and she was open bred for her entire heat cycle (dairy goats are seasonal breeders, usually 3 months long, with fertal days 21 days apart lasting about 3 days or so each time) So, she missed her last date when she could have been due, so if she was bred her next chance it would be 3 weeks later, which is coming up. Hope that is all understandable. This girl hasn't had any problems kidding, never needed an assist, but has always had triplets (common enough in dairy goats) with her last breeding producing quads (a little less common, sorta like having a singlte) but she is gettin up in age now, so Im not expecting more than twins out of her and worry about her having much larger than she's used to kids because there will be fewer. I can certainly step in if needed, but have my fingers crossed I won't have to. Her udder isn't tight yet, but her ligaments are looser (but not gone yet!) Im not expecting her udder to get tight until the day of or even during labor since she is so experianced. Makes for estimating her labor that much harder! She's driving me NUTS. I sit with her in her big 25x100 ft pen, just sit on a crate, and she wants me to love on her. She'll graze a bit, but spends most of her time getting my attention, pushing her big polled head into my lap so I'll scratch her behind her ears and under her chin where she can't reach because of her size now. She's become such a baby! She is streching alot which I've heard is also a good sign when they start getting closer, they do it to get the babies into position in the birth canal. Anyone else have a goat due? I'd love to hear!!!!

I hear goat meat is really good. i want to try some, but no one around here slaughters their goats. I hear its like venison.
People around here will eat Boer goats sometimes, we have alot of mennonites (sp?) near us and love to use them to butcher, they have a nice business out of town. That said I haven't got to eat it myself yet, but have heard its like a cross between deer and lamb (assuming you eat a young goat ie less than a year, better if close to 8-9 months) I've also heard from my cousin who is a chef in Aruba that the locals there soak the meat in milk overnight before using it for stew, but their goat herds are pretty wild and the bucks run with the herd year round, which may lead to stinkier animals. Im looking forward to trying it, since we aren't interested in keeping any bucks that our girl has, and they will do more good in our freezer than sold. Does stay with the herd until I don't want or need anymore, then I'll sell them because they are such good, high-volume milkers (Saanen) although they have the lower butter-fat. I know alot of ppl like the small goats, but to me its safer to have one big enough to protect itself from most common preditors around here. My girl is also polled which is uncommon in Saanens, but it means that close to 50% of her offspring will be polled also. (ya no disbudding!) Sorry for such a long reply, Its just so nice to have a forum for goats!

Hey! None of the girls are expecting, we already had our round of kids, but I was wondering about your saneens personality. What's she like?
I have a Saanen as well, and think she is great. She hasn't freshened yet, as she is still under a year, but already has the nice build of a good dairy goat. Her temperament is fabulous, always friendly and willing to be petted and touched. We've even used her in petting zoo's.

She LOVED all the attention.

Hey thanks for pointing this thread out to me Mr. MKK Farms! We breed Mini Nubians (Nigerian/Nubian), and Nubians!
No problem! And please, call me Mitch or Mitchell! :) I love your goats Jenae! :love :love
Ok! Thanks! Aw, thank you. They've stolen our hearts. Oh, by the way, have you gotten any goats yet? I heard awhile back that you really wanted some.
I haven't because 1. We have lots of puppies and my mom isn't ready for them. 2. We are going on vacation. So yeah. Hopefully end of summer I will get some. Don't have any yet though... :hit
