Lets talk about goats!

That's what I was wondering. I know dandruff is caused by dry skin and can be washed out, but is it ultimately caused by a mineral deficiency? Regardless, goats should have free choice minerals.

I had a goat mineral salt lick thing but ran out last week and I hadn't gone shipping. Picked up 50lbs of goat minerals today and got some out for them. I'll give them a bath and see what happens I guess.

My vet told me that dandruff is often caused by a nutritional deficiency of some sort.

Thats one of the things I've read. I need to do more homework I think. I thought I had diet figured out but maybe not. Other then hey, a few treats, a handful of grain, free choice minerals and forage is there anything else i should have for them?

No. That should do it. Hay for goats needs to be of very good quality, though.

Thats not dandruff. Thats mineral deficiency. What minerals are they getting? There will not be enough nutrients in feed and hay.

That's coming out of winter dry skin. Making sure your goats get their minerals will help but they all get flakey skin coming out of winter. They have thick hair coats and do t get bathed in the winter. Plus you add cold dry air. Once mine shed out or get clipped for a show, it goes away. I wouldn't get worked up about it unless there is hair loss, or weight loss along with it.

I have never had a goat show that much dandruff in the spring, but of course we have very mild winters.
