I'm reviving this old thread because it was super helpful to me. I've switched to an All-flock feed with thawed frozen corn and a milled soy-free broiler feed (it's really high protein so they don't get much) with LOTS of water. My vet recommended the corn and watered feed to help keep my hens hydrated and further prevent kidney damage. I have oyster shell in a separate container that they can free choice. They also continue to get a lot of time in the compost bin and in my small urban backyard to free range. So far-- no broken eggs, no shell less eggs, no peritonitis and we've been on this regime for a year now. I MIGHT be able to say that is easier to crack the eggs on the side of a bowl so maybe they aren't quite a thick-shelled as with the layer pellets but it's not enough to cause problems in the nest box.
Just wanted to share my experience for anyone who is trying to figure out how to feed their pets.
