I was playing with my chickens and then went inside. Almost immediately, all heck broke loose, chickens screams rang. I ran towards the slide window that leads to the back and noticed a white bird, with beautiful, narrow eyes. It was a little bit smaller than a medium sized chicken. It was flying about 2 yards in the air and 1 yard from the slide window, it had it's head aimed at the left and it's left eye was staring directly at me. After about 5 seconds it flew off. In fear that it might prey of my chickens I went of the Predators and Pest forum here on BYC and found out that it is was a Northern Harrier, which come in a great variety of colors. Here is a link. So, I discovered that it has a very low chance of hurting my chickens, like such a low chance that it would most likely only attack my chickens when rabid or something, because my chickens are to big.
Anyway, I wanted to ask you for your opinion to why was the bird there, just staring at me. This is not a Predator and Pest thread, it is just chat about stuff and that stuff is this bird. I have been watching this bird since last year, from when it was brown to when it molted. It is about an year old. Also the chickens scream at anything in the sky ever since crows killed about 20 of their flock members, even planes.

My husband has a shop that a bird (forget what breed) made her nest in one of his toolboxes. Sadly a bluejay found the box and ate her babies. But ever since that one year she’s been coming back and actually has a nest there to sleep and to lay more eggs. He once caught her eating from the chick starter feed he had accidentally left open. She goes to sleep there every night so he leaves his shop open for her (and the dog).

Anyway, the purpose of my story was to relate it to yours. Maybe the bird found a liking to you 🤷‍♀️ At least that’s what I’ve noticed with that little bird in my husband’s shop that has been there at least since last year or the year prior, can’t remember.

Awesome bird. That is really nice that your husband did that. 😀 Also blue jays eat eggs?

I wonder what I did that spiked it's interest... I threw a dead mouse out of the house recently, maybe it ate it? The mouse was not poisoned.

The chicks had already hatched 😭 I saw them since they weren’t that concealed. They were a bit older than newly hatched too because they weren’t little babies anymore, they were starting to fill in.

Was this recently or last year when you saw it first?

ETA: 🤦‍♀️ I just read the part where you said “recently”

How did you see it last year? Just passing by?

Blue jays... the sweet little cuties that have big watery eyes and kind voices, that tends to travel with grey jays with kind hearts and no division, murder babies! :hit

I would think that this time around yes, maybe that bird was the one that ate the mouse. I am very interested if it will keep coming back and get close like it did.
