That looks like a Cuckoo to me a White would be all yellow or silvery white no dark feathers on either of those colors.....

I love the feathered shanks on that chick how big is the yellow on the top of the head? Big smeary spot is a cockerel small dot is a pullet

What a cute chick! But I was thinking the same thing as lotsapaints. Shouldn't be all yellow and not be dark to be a white? Thanks for all the info lotsapaints, very informative. I really like learning about genetics.

I agree, they look more Cuckoo than white. When I come back from vacation I'll probably order more white marans eggs and try another hatch. Thanks for the infor I'll go look at there heads now and check.

Chicken genetics are still difficult for me to grasp but I do understand equine color genetics that said chickens have lots more modifiers still like horses they come in 2 base colors there are so many people on here that are knowledgeable you'll start to pick it up. Just use that search button and you can pull up more

He's beautiful. Do the white's lay as dark of an egg as the other marans?

Probably about a 6. There are some lines of whites that lay nice dark eggs, but most whites are not as big as the black copper and wheaten, so the eggs are not as big, at least here in Europe.
Don's got whites that lay dark eggs.

All my recessive whites (Bresse and Marans) hatch out plain white/yellow, with no trace of anything on them. The Marans had a bit of gray in the upper shank, to distinguish them from Wheatens.
