Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Yes hard to know where to direct your breeding program for the golden cuckoos when there is really no standard yet lol. Then when they make one, all of a sudden a whole bunch of people are supposed to have 'correct birds' to take to the approval meeting...

thats because they are autosexing.. the "Brown" looking chicks are females(that is if they are pure for the ER/ER e allele)

My roo has grown up! He has a few half white tail feathers, but he may still molt them out. He is all I have left so he is my MAIN man right now. His legs are nicely feathered, he may have a stub or 2 on his middle toes but not much. Since my pullets are not as feathered on the leg he will improve that I hope. NO GOLD!

I would like a little longer back, but I LOVE his tail angle. He is HUGE if you can't tell from the pictures. He may be bigger than my Good Shepard BR roo at maybe 8 months old. No sprigs, no white ear lobes. Nice eye color. I am pleased with him for my first breeder roo from my own flock. I am thinking of putting him with my blues I started with. Over all I really liked those girls, but I thought they were carrying gold, but since they molted I don't see anything that looks gold, could it have just been old feathered discolored from the sun?

Donna, I hope you do not spread the eggs from these cuckoo all around the country. I am sure you are aware that the white tail feathers will breed forward and some unsuspecting person will buy them and be teed off that they are junt when they hatch and feather out.

I feel like we have had this conversation about the white feathers. Seems Walt jumped in... can't remember what thread it was, but I don't think it is a DQ. He said that is one of the things that needs to be CLEANED up when they work on the SOP..... I could be all wrong here.

He is the BEST I have. He has NICE EVERY thing but a feather. I built the BARN and I will PAINT them later. I think he will stay and be breed and if I spread his eggs all over the country it will be with full disclosure as I cannot hide that GLARING white feather.

Donna, if you remember Walt said to the lady working on the proposed SOP that the White feather would not be accepted and would be a DQ. If you do not watch you will have the identical same problem we had with the BC.

The white tail feathers are a DQ not a fault.

That is a topic that was brought up several times when the Committee was writing the Standards that will be presented to the APA. I don't want to speak out of turn, but I don't think that white in the tail feather is going to be a disqualification. White in a tail feather is not desirable, but I don't think that it is going to be a disqualification.

I will be able to answer the question after we get back from a meeting that is planned at the show in Newnan, Georgia. This is one of the questions that I plan to ask while we are there. I hope that we get a large number of Cuckoos entered there to make some decisions about planning a Qualifying Meet for the Cuckoos.
