Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Hi

It looks like a golden duckwing, there are several of us working on a line of those. I have also crossed a golden duckwing to a cuckoo in the hope of producing a crele line. What was the chick down like?

Hi, this is a picture of that very pullet at a couple of days old.

On another note, I finally have a double dose barred gold cuckoo in my latest hatch!!
HenThymes - What is a "double dose barred gold cuckoo?" Thanks -
When you see a dark bodied gold cuckoo male he would be a single does of barred. When you see the lighter/whiter colored gold cuckoo male he would be carrying a double dose of barring.

My original cockerel was a single dose

I believe this is a example of the double dose

Thanks for the explanation and photos to illustrate. I should photo my 2 GCM roos - I would think they are both "double-dose." I only have a photo of the one I gave away. Would love to have GCM hens for the 2 I kept.

This is the one I gave away - I thought his color was gorgeous, but he was slight in build compared to the other 2.

Is Crele the same as Golden Cuckoo? If not, how will the inexperienced keep them seperated? I was told not to use any wheaten based birds in my GCs.

The crele is made from a cross of golden duckwing crossed with a cuckoo. The birds that most people are calling golden cuckoo are a cross between a wheaten and a cuckoo. I am working on a crele line and on the F2's waiting for the pullets to come into lay.

Hi

To produce a golden duckwing chick like the one in the picture you must have a male and female carrying that recessive gene.

Yep- I am having an impossible time collecting a flock's worth of birds that do not have wheaten. How do you know when you look a what appears to be a nice example of GC if they have wheaten in them or not?

Bev, kind of off topic for this thread but... where would you suggest I get Blue Wheaten Marans eggs from with excellent egg color?

Hi

When gold started showing up in the cuckoo's the chick down had yellow in it. You will have to study the chick down, the females should be a dark color with a small spot on the head and males a dark grey with a darker spot on the head. If the chick shows any gold in it's feathering then it most probably is carrying wheaten. I did some experiments by crossing a black copper with a cuckoo and it took a lot of breeding to get any gold in the females. If a wheaten is crossed with a cuckoo the color is transferred easily.

Hi

This is how the blue gene works

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue . 25% Black , 25% Splash
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash
Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black X Black = 100% Black
Splash X Black = 100% Blue
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

I don't know anyone who is selling eggs from blue wheatens but we are going for the qualifying meet at the end of this month and I can ask around for you.
