Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Hi Sandy, the meet for the Cuckoo to be recognized/accepted is going to be held at the Shawnee OK show in 2013. I will ask Bev and Dick what we need to do exactly. So I can post it.

Nicol, many thanks. I will look forward to the details and Oklahoma is not far! You all will need to guide us a bit here as we have not participated in anything besides 4H showing.

Hi Nicol, I hope you were only joking about there not being many things for a Marans to be DQ for in you statement. We just recently did a comple list with all the DQ and faults on it. Mathace has a site with this but can not remember the name. Wynette has a thread where it is all recorded called Breeding to the SOP.

All the Dq and fault info is in the first 30 pages of the SOP. Very little is ever noted in the individual breed standards.

Well I wasn't joking but most of the DQ faults should be obvious. When you are choosing your best you should of course have an idea of what would be a DQ fault.I was talking about Cuckoos in particular not all the other varieties. I will list DQ's for them as soon as I can get an accurate list. Thanks for pointing that out.

I looked for you and your birds at the OH National Don, you weren't there. I was disappointed. I was wanting to see what you had been working on.

Here is a link to MATHACE's Marans DQ list. It is concerning Black Coppers but many of the physical faults can be all varieties. The post it is very informative.

Although I feel these should be obvious faults to most breeders.

Cuckoos are different when it comes to white allowance in the hackles and tails. I believe Bev told me it is OK as long as it is no more than a 2 inch piece.

These are some of the golden cuckoo project chicks I've been hatching. I crossed two different pens of a golden cuckoo male over black copper females. There is one golden cuckoo hen in with one rooster, so some of the chicks came from that combination.

Most hatched dark like these:

Two so far hatched brown.

Cute babies, it will be intersting to see how they develop as they mature. Will having crossed golden cuckoo with BCM birds cause an issue as far as the copper being in there?

All 4 of my cuckoo girls have started laying now- picked up 4 eggs from them yesterday!! I now have the incubator up and running with 17 cuckoo eggs and 1 Ameraucana egg( DS(6)'s birds and he is so wanting 1 to hatch out-they are not currently laying well :()

So counting out 21 days- we will see what hatches out on March 27th 2012 or so!! :D My friend also has a broody sitting on 5 cuckoo eggs due March 17th and whatever hatches will come back to me!!

Several experienced breeders suggested the cross to create a line of GCM that breeds true and improves a few characteristics. For example, all but one of the chicks hatched so far have feathered shanks.

If anyone is interested, I can post pictures as they mature so others can see how they turn out as well.

Hi Harris5, good to see you posting. Question on the Gold chicks, will these be Golden Cuckoo when feathered, they sure are nice looking. Don

Thank you, Don! It's nice to chat again! These chicks are from the first hatch this year using two GCM roosters I grew out from last year. I'm not sure how they will feather in. I'll post pictures of them, and the others, as they mature. :)
