lets talk white leghorns who on here has some and raises them

After much research, we decided to go with the white leghorns for this purpose alone. With five kids at home we can go through a dozen eggs in one morning. I just picked mine up from the PO yesterday- 15 from Cackle. I understand their not very good sitters and have considered getting a couple of same aged sitters and mix them now while they're young- good idea or not? I had one person tell me I needed all of one breed or all mixed as the two or three "outcasts" as she called them will be picked upon. Banking on at least one cockerel in the mix from Cackle.

Very good idea - leghorns seldom go broody, although it has happened. Like maybe

twice in history.

Do get more than one hen capable of going broody, yes. I like mixed flocks, so I would recommend three or more ladies who may be capable of going broody. It's not a sure thing...

One other thing, I had the above referenced chicks vacinated for Marek's at Cackle- after reading a Mareks thread under another thread if I can find some same aged sitters and mix them now I would need to have them vacinated as well, correct?

I have been researching since before I placed my order in March and the more I learn the more the more I realize I know enough to know nothing at all.

What breeds would you recommend? And/or, what do you think of just getting a small incubator? At this point I feel like I am in over my head but by the time these chicks are laying, incubating is something I would like to try.
