Letting my broody raise 20 meaties. Now I have a rooster raising 50 CX chicks~new batch!

I've decided to let him live but not in the coop with the chicks....as long as I see no more injuries or behaviors from him.

Here he is today with some of the CX, foraging in the pines:

He's useful for hawk duty but I'm watching him closely....I want no more chick abuse! For the most part he is very sweet to them...I just think he is very confused because he has no hens. I might get him a companion hen to help him mind the children.

I have 6 Cornish Rocks being raised by a brody Silkey. 3 weeks and all is well so far. The CornishX seem almost like chickens. I am feeding them all they can eat in 30 minnutes 2X daily, plus forrage, and they are active and poop normal. I would not want to fool around with lights, heat when a hen will do better for free.

I agree. Mine are just like chickens also...funny thing, isn't it? Everyone complains about them being Frankenchickens but they are just piggy little birds that act like all the other chickens when you don't feed their appetites to the fullest.

OK, well the meaties are going out tonight with the broody. I moved her and the 'fake' eggs to the new pen and she was mad for awhile before she decided to go back to sitting. I wanted to make sure she STAYED put!

THEN...

yes, there is a 'then' to this.

A duck egg hatched in the silkie pen I wasn't expecting to hatch. As I have no real room or need for MORE ducks, I think I'm going to raise it with the meaties under the broody (I hope she can handle 7) and probably keep the duck just for meat use. Its a Pekin, so it will be perfect for those needs.

So I'm going to have a very full tractor when I move them from the pen.

I need to start photoing and tracking what I'm doing so I know where I most likely will screw up! hahaha

HE got to live! He is cute! I didn't know roosters were at all interested in chicks!?

HILARIOUS!

Yeah...I never had a roo interested in chicks either, so this one is just a tad confused. He hurt another chick while I was out there a few minutes ago, so he will try out the new plucker tomorrow...I'll let you know how it all went.
