Letting my broody raise 20 meaties. Now I have a rooster raising 50 CX chicks~new batch!

Just goes to show ya that women can do a lot of things that guys can do, but not many guys can do a woman's job....

THAT IS SO TRUE!!! If any butchering goes on here...it will be me as well. My husband WON"T have AYTHING to do with it! However, I gaurantee you he WILL pull up to the chicken dinner when it hits the table though!

Yes! Here in this house, the women do all the processing and the men do all the eating also(My mother's house).

When my boys were growing up, I decided that cycle had to stop, so I required they gut, skin and work out the meat of their own deer~no more expecting grandma or mom to do it for them. I told them that finding a wife that was willing to gut their deer for them would be nigh impossible, so they might as well learn to do their own.

I also made them learn how to bake bread, cook meals, clean and do their own laundry. They've turned out to be pretty versatile fellas..the only thing they never got to learn was to bring up babies. Guess they'll have to learn that one on their own.

Ha!
that's hysterical!

where I lived until a year ago (CA) the men don't WANT their women to know that kind of stuff... it makes 'em nervous I think

LOL! Round here, the women just refuse. The men are required to gut that thing themselves and then they take it to a processor. We just won't, so they'd better do it themselves or quit hunting!

My boys are 8 and 11 years old.....I am attempting to teach them to garden and raise animals correctly. I need to take your lead and add dishes and laundry to the list! They have to do chores around the house now and then, but I think I need to make it more regular. Thanks for the idea!

I think every boy dreams of finding a girl like their mom or grandma...one that does all the "women's work" and half the "man's work" around the home~but even finding a girl who knows how to clean a house is a rarity these days. Even if you find one, it doesn't mean you can keep her.

I was a single mom, so I drilled the lesson into the boys that your partner in life doesn't always stick around and sometimes they do stick around but they aren't really a partner~this leaves one person who is responsible for doing the necessary things in life.

Every woman needs to know how to change a tire, the oil in their car, maintenance the lawnmower, build something with various power tools, kill and process an animal, simple plumbing and electrical wiring, etc. One day you may not have a man around or your man will be disabled in some way~it's best to know it and not need it than to need it and not know it.

Same with all the menfolk...they should be able to cook, clean, take care of children properly, pay the bills, balance a checkbook, grow and preserve foods, etc.

Heck, I think it would be a dream to find a MAN who knows how to do man things, let alone the women. So many men not learned in men skills nowadays...and they aren't a bit ashamed of not knowing how to kill and gut an animal, clean a fish, change the oil. What in the world were they doing while growing up? Sitting in the corner of a dark room?

Rudy the Roo tried out the plucker today...the plucker was a flop but the rooster was excellent meat! I don't know if it was the fermented grain he's been eating, but I don't think I've eaten an adult rooster with such a good, tender texture and sweet flavor before...and I've eaten plenty of adult free ranged roosters and old hens.

The CX have been foraging like mad all day as they got a new paddock of fresh forage/graze today...part in the pines and part in grass. I just went out to put them in the coop as some were still out in the pouring rain at 8:15 going to town on the earth worms that came to the surface. They don't have sense enough to go to the coop at night and I think they would stay out all night eating things if they could see to do so.

Whoever thinks that CX are too lazy to forage need only watch these 3 wk old meaties to give up on that idea...I wish everyone could raise theirs this way because it sure is a hoot to watch all that meat growing in a healthy way, chickeny way.

That's good to hear that he tasted good! Maybe it was the fermented feed.

I just enlarged the area that mine will be able to hang out in outside - they're going to love it. My last batch would line up at the door for free-range time in the afternoons (I'd let them in the huge layer yard sometimes). They would chase bugs and do their sumo-wrestler thing. They were so fun to watch!

Well I updated our situation... nasty silkie mama wasn't having this 'raising' something that wasn't her own.

So we're going to retry the situation in another manner.... best gently handled! hahaha (Try broody #2 next)

For now... 6 meaties under a heat lamp w/ their new buddy the 'DUCK'.

Very cute! I'm sure they are wondering what in the world is wrong with that chicken's nose and feet!

They all walk the same, so that should be no different....

Seeing that water jar with the shavings in the water sure brought back memories....I'm so glad to have discovered these water nipples! Ever think of trying them? They eliminate one of the biggest headaches of brooding chicks...and of keeping the adult chickens also. So clean, so efficient...no messy water, no wet chicks, no wet bedding, no wasted water.

Wish I had known about them years ago! My CX started in using them immediately they were placed in the brooder...no teaching necessary. One tried it and then they all followed his lead.
