If you live where the weather is generally humid, use less water. If you live where it is more of a dry climate, keep a closer eye on it. Too high of humidity and your chicks will drown in the egg when they get time to hatch. Too little and the membrane will dry out, sort of shrink around the chick and stick to it and it will not be able to pip or possibly hatch and it will die too. How many eggs are you incubating? If one chick is worth more than ten dollars, or two, then getting a hygrometer is worth it. Try shopping online and get it delivered if you can't get out to go get it.
