I finally present the new babies.
They've been coming up to me when I come out but they're also very cautious of my sudden movements too so I've been careful to avoid scaring them.
The little cockerel likes to peck my fingers when I offer them food in my hand lol

Good news bad news...

Good news is I will most likely get more chicks next spring

Bad news is I am 90% sure 6 of the 8 lavender orps I hatched are boys

Well that's not the way the gender ratios are supposed to work! I guess at least you got 2, but still a bummer!

Do you already have breeds in mind for your new chicks next year?

But just curious whether this supposedly 2yr old male budgie is actually male or female? Very pale cere, a bit blue, but very pale and slightly off colour as you can see. Suspiciously light for an adult...

Males have a bluish cere, females are pinkish to white, so yes I believe you have a boy there!

I actually think you're right! Twocrows is correct that males have blue ceres, however I've been informed recently that female budgies can sometimes have pale blue ceres when not in breeding season- it's rarer, but it happens. Much paler than a dark blue that mature males typically get. Also based on behaviour, we are guessing that the owner was mistaken and she's actually a girl. (Until proven otherwise)

Geez, that's a cute one! My google tutorial on sexing parakeets, (jk, jk, why are we the only ones that call them this?!) didn't give me any magical insight as to what your cutie might be. (Totally let me know where to find the DNA testing GOFUNDME, though lol.) I'd really like to know if/when you find out!
