I actually think you're right! Twocrows is correct that males have blue ceres, however I've been informed recently that female budgies can sometimes have pale blue ceres when not in breeding season- it's rarer, but it happens. Much paler than a dark blue that mature males typically get. Also based on behaviour, we are guessing that the owner was mistaken and she's actually a girl. (Until proven otherwise)

Ooh I didn't know there was one

Frankie (the new girl) is super depressed, does anyone have any advice? She sits on one perch (she has others) and does nothing all day but stare into the room blankly, occassionally preens and eats, but she has no enthusiasm for life. If you come too close, she threatens with her beak open and breathes heavily

She strikes me as not having a very good past. I'm not sure how to cheer her up, she won't play with toys, she won't take treats, the best we can do so far is play her some jazz and sit with her at a distance, giving her space. That's when she's calmest, but still seems so sad

English budgies are known for being low energy, but what you’re describing doesn’t sound normal. If this doesn’t get better once she’s more settled, I’d start looking for any illness she might have.

I suspect getting to be together with your boy once she’s done with quarantine might help raise her spirits

I hope so! I figure if she mistreated, ie. Covered with a blanket constantly, not fed a good diet, kept in the dark on her own, that could explain why she behaves this way
So very different to Charlie with his spinning head bobbing whistling flapping crazy antics

She's in quarantine for a month from now, but if she's still acting really offish I'm going to make that longer/a vet trip added on. Don't want to risk anything spreading to Charlie.

He's going to be so happy to have a friend. He definitely loves spending time with us, plucking our eyebrows and sitting on our shoulders, un-demure things like that, but he so clearly needs a friend of his own kind

But no I doubt it, they won't have a nest box etc so hopefully no broodiness!

@BelovedBirds Sounds like the new bird needs some time to heal. A good diet, maybe some probiotics and time should help her out. Go slow with her, don't force her to come out of her cage or interact. But I'd leave the cage door open a bit when ever you are around so she knows she's not trapped and can come out if she wishes.

Charlie was able to have this from the get go really as our lounge was nice and secure and bird proof- and he was never timid so after a bit of persuasion he'd always choose to go back in. (Though now he mostly stays in his cage with the door open and just comes out for a lap of the room or to sit on the outside of the cage- he's very chill and loves his cage now.)

Give her time, could take a year but if you create a loving calm atmosphere, it will give her the opportunity to trust you. Parrots are very delicate emotionally and become scarred easily. Some of them can come around, others maybe not. Just be gentle and go slow with her.
