LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Today has gone terrible as well.
First our neighbor was arguing with his wife because she had a weapon.
Then I fell into a deep hole that our dogs dug.
And now I see that the duck eggs are stuck in Florida right now. I'm not sure what I'm going to do if they arrive late and our broody hen decides to stop being broody because we don't have an incubator.

Oh no! I hope it all works out for you.

I've got a fairly young serama hen broody on some eggs right now. Hoping that she doesn't quit on me!

Well, after the initial 48 hours, and you let her out and hour before roost time and she goes to nest instead of roost, I'd do another 48 hours....if that doesn't work leave her in the crate 72 hours.
Couple things that might help is to change the location of the crate.
Once had a serial broody, had trouble breaking her, but it was hot as hell out so had to move crate out of coop and move it twice a day to shade, think the change of scenery helped break her. Tho she kept going broody(7 times) so I gave her away, and she never went broody again.
Lol. Of course she didn’t. She had all those eggs she didn’t lay for you to get out.

I was worried with the heat it may take a while. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Ah, just before roost time... When I was breaking my broody I was letting her out early in the day. Likely took longer than it should of. She just stopped getting broody after she raised a group of shipped chicks, got it out of her system i guess.

I am an LGBTQ+ Chicken keeper! I identify as Agender, and I'm Panromantic

Welcome. Is they/them OK? :)

Yike, I'm sorry it's gone so bad! For what it's worth my broodies never break unless I work on breaking them, so they probably will still be sitting when the eggs show up as long as they're not bothered too much.

Today I finished having my Lughnasadh gathering and it was GREAT. Cornhole was SUPER fun, we talked about a million things like Disney movies and philosophy and star trek and gift economies and animation and kombucha and gossiped a little about pals we haven't seen in a while, I showed off my plants, my super queer lady pal held a bunch of baby bunnies. I traded some frozen cockerels to some friends from a farm about 40mins out of town for some black currant syrup and fresh veggies we didn't grow this year and some frozen pawpaw fruit. We talked about dominance trees in genetics and why I have two isolated batches of chicks I'm waiting to lay eggs to test the egg color genes on my rooster and my plans for the rabbits. I showed off a lot of my gardens and we all lamented how late the frosts were this spring and how much it set everything back.

It rained like the dickens half the time but we have an awning/porch area so we strung a tarp up on some PVC from one edge of the awning to help create a tented area to expand our dry spots and it was super effective. Folks sat about 10' apart for eating and 6' apart with masks for chatting.

We ate home-made buns with bind runes painted on them with brats and burgers we grilled and kebab'd veggies (all single serving things so people didn't have to touch communal dishes) that we made with masks and gloves and hair nets on. Cleanup was easy 'cause it all went into the compost buckets and almost no utencils, so no cross contamination.

I feel so happy right now. <3 Friends are great and we're looking forward to doing something like this again, maybe for the next sabbat (Mabon) or something.

I unexpectedly ended up having to cover the overnight shift at work, so I brought a buddy along to keep me company. This is Braemar, my favorite roo (because of his soft, vibrato crow). Braemar likes spending the night at my desk even less than I do. 😴🙄

@aart is there a stage two for broody that won’t break? Or just longer in the cage? I don’t have a problem yet I’m just prepping to break all these girls.
I am a broody bronc buster in TX. You just have to stay on for the full 8 seconds. They stay in prison until they stop their ticking time bomb noises and pancacking. But @aart is the authority I learned from. They do break even when they seem impossible about it. There have been some difficult hens though. Usually they break by the time we talk about putting them on ice blocks. Or like this week show up with a new clutch of chicks. I keep mine in prison with no bedding do you keep them similarly? Mine just get food water and shaded concrete bedding.

She laid/lays a gorgeous dark brown egg too.
I think it can take longer in the heat.
The one I just broke thankfully went just as the heat wave ended,
I was not looking forward to hauling that crate all over.

I put a fan on her, too. I’ll check this evening. Being my first time I let her out yesterday twice but she was still clicking away. She did however venture all the way to the compost pile in her second outing which I have not seen her do while broody. She went straight back to the nest box though when she came back but I caught her before she went in.

Anyone happen to have fecal float resources I’m ordering a microscope today. I think I may have some worms in a few chickens that have messy butts. Plus I’d love to do my own for the horses. If I did every horse plus a follow up after deworming, I’ve paid for the microscope in savings. Plus I can stay on top of the chickens.

I decided on a mid quality microscope that goes slightly beyond the basic magnifications needed for fecals but does not have a camera. I can add an attachment later if I need it....

I'd suggest a centrifuge too...and a mechanical stage.
Think it's fairly simple, after the learning curve-just like chickens.
Biggie is a good reference book so you know what you're looking at/for.

There was a thread here....hmmm.....will look for it.
Here's few:

I was just reading about a centrifuge. May as well do it right. Add that to the list. I’ve got a mechanical stage scope in the amazon basket. Trying to decide if the binocular vs monocular is worth it. This is getting expensive but still cheaper in the long run for sure.
