Birds that have a lot of room and especially in flocks with roosters, there is little squabbling, where as flocks with no rooster, hens argue and fuss, making the pecking order quite evident. At least this is what I've noticed in my own flocks. I have a theory on why this is. I think in roosterless flocks hens get nervous and hens feel insecure so the pecking order is quite obvious as they are all in the protection mode. However when roosters are around, they relax and don't bicker because they feel safe and secure, no need to squabble. At least this is my theory.

Long story short, your flock is probably relaxed enough, the order is not very evident, it's there but not too apparent.
