LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

So the first 6 I got were hatchery's choice. However, I am pretty confident that I have 2 Barred Plymouth rocks, 2 Black Australorps, and 2 Buff Orpingtons. Then the other 2 i got a week later and they are for sure Rhode Island Reds. I may have gotten a little addicted to them already hahaha

I wish I could have that many. We live in the suburbs and our city restricts us to 10 of any fowl and no roos. I would love to own some land where I could have my own farm and grow my flock more. Maybe some day haha

Keep the dream alive! My wife and I got land just under 2 years ago. 5 acres. We are slowly working toward self sufficiency. I just partnered with a csa and am going to be raising meat birds and eggs for my community. I'm so grateful.

That is awesome! We are growing our own fruits and veggies but yea I want to work towards self sufficiency too as I think it will be important in the future. I plan on keeping the dream alive haha. My wife isnt fully onboard though because we do have a 3 year old and another one on the way. Maybe in a few years when the kids are older

Yeah I guess I can see both sides. I think if I had children I would feel more urgent about severing my reliance on big corporations/fossil fuels etc. But kids would make it harder to take the plunge. We took our dogs and lived in a camper for like 2 years(around 30 different states) and really made sure this is what we wanted. Where we wanted. So far it was the best decision series of my life. But I didn't have little ones to think about.

Congrats on the pregnancy!! :jumpy 🥳

Thank you! Kids put a whole different spin on things! For me it is definitely a big driver to become more self sufficient. Where did you guys end up? We are in CO and I was up in the mountains last weekend and they had lots of acreage up for sale and I almost wanted to buy some. Do you have roos too or just hens?

Im in NW Massachusetts. I have one rooster right now and seven birds too young to tell. Im currently taking guesses on their sex on other threads lol. I love ghe idea of my chicks coming from within, and only have 4 neighbors in a 5 mile radius, so roos were a no brainer. Mine came free with my pullets!

He is only around 6 months old, but quite virile!

He is a handsome boy! So how many more chickens are you going to end up getting to raise the meat birds? Ive seen them sold in batches of 50 or 100 and think that would be interesting to do too. Just so different than raising layers. Are you going to build another coop as well?
