Looks like I'm not going to take the job at Safeway. They assumed that I was leaving my current job but I'm not so I said that I'd have to declined in taking the job.
They mentioned how they couldn't hire someone already working in a store that sells groceries.

Bummer.....but I wondered how you were going to balance schedules between the 2 places.

It was going to be early morning shift(6AM-?) at new job and evening shift at current job. I would have been able to handle them both.

Well she asked when I'd be putting in my 2 week notice and that tipped me off that they had assumed I was quitting my current job.
I told her that I'd just declined the new job and keep my current one

You didn't explain/ask about working mornings at one place and evenings at the other?
Maybe they wanted to give you more hours?

During the interview, I explained that I was just simply looking for a second job to help with bills. That should have let her know that I wasn't quitting my current job.
