It's got to be stubbornness. They started teaching the metric system in the schools at one point decades ago but parents couldn't help their kids with homework, people rebeled, the entire experiment fell apart.
I was in high school back in the 70s when they thought switching to Metric would be great. I never heard why the project was abandonded.

In 2000, I was working in a tool and die shop. Someone told me the reason was that they couldn't get all the automotive companies (and other major manufacturing companies) to switch to Metric. It would have meant retooling EVERYTHING, and replacing millions of tools. Not just a button to select metric or imperial. Not just .236 versus .250 on a cad file.

Maybe they'll try again someday.

Oh I am sure it was all "money driven" to dump the experiment, everything is these days unfortunately. :hmm And it's only getting worse.

🤦‍♂️

It can be done gradually, you know. For something like this.

At this point, with the majority of the world being metric, the costs would be minimal. AND if they make anything they plan on selling to other countries, it already has to be metric!

And this is why the US does no manufacturing of mechanical parts, we let China do that.
Yes, and yes. We really shot ourselves in the foot, if you ask me. Our hubris is coming back to bite us in the arse.

So correct! And I really don't think we can remedy the situation at this point, China is definitely pulling ahead, surpassing us as the world's manufacturing headquarters.

And here we stand, staring, wondering how it happened and playing catch up.

As much as I wish my body were 30 years younger, I don't wish to be 31 again. I am sorry for the mess we (my generation, especially) have left.

I am no spring chicken either, :hugs I too have NO interest in reliving my youth. :gig Seriously though, yes the US climbed hard and fast, but the foundations were not built well. It's all crumbling now. Babies born today will never see or live as we did.
