LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Thankfully, we're OK. The wildlifes have been burning pretty much the whole of Attica, so we've been on high alert these past few days, but as of now, we're OK. I really hope it stays that way

I really appreciate the thought :hugs
Stay safe out there Fluffy! :hugs Our town is still recovering from 2 devastating fires that ripped through our mountain town mid June, everyone evacuated, 1500 structures and homes lost, 2 people died, much of the forest gone. Fires are awful for everything in its path. Evacuate if they say to, once these walls of flames move, they are killers. :hugs

So sorry to hear about your experiences with such tragic wildfires :hugs . It's a very stressful thing to be near, let alone actually escaping to save your life

I worry about the chickens the most. I don't have seven birds, there are about thirty or more birds here currently, most of which free range, and most of which aren't human friendly. I just don't know how I can catch them all in need of an evacuation. It's one of my biggest fears

We've had some wicked fires here over the past 10-15 years, hot ash raining from orange skies, thick heavy air burning your eyes, throat and lungs, air tankers flying right over the house dropping slurry not a 1/4 mile away, and I've never lost a single chicken or quail. Even old chickens in their teens. They are extremely tough creatures. We have never evacuated  because of our managerie of critters, although we have never been in the direct path yet either. One fire came close at a 1/4 mile zipping past us though, we didn't sleep at all that night watching 100ft flames roar past. I just couldn't imagine leaving my animals and birds here to survive by themselves and I don't think evac centers would take poultry. 😁 Its my responsibility to keep them alive and safe. My motto is to go down with the ship. 🤣 But I don't recommend staying during evacuation orders to anyone else, it is dangerous, scary and could be deadly. :hugs

Wow! You can handle a lot more stress than I can! I follow the same principle, I don't even want to think about leaving my animals behind. Ideally I wouldn't be leaving if they aren't all rounded up and loaded in the vehicles. Life doesn't always work the way we want it though, so if that can't work, grab as many as you can is what I'm thinking. The "ship", I don't mind. The passengers are my main concern.

If push comes to shove and some birds can't be taken with, they'll be let loose to have the best chance they have in this horrible situation. But truthfully, the feeling od leaving them behind will be horrible

I agree 100%, unless they were all ready to go, I can't leave! But fire rarely gives you this much warning. I would be positively sick leaving them behind. It would damage me for life if they died in fire. :( But yes I've thought of this too, releasing them to survive. The neighbors released their horses before they evacuated, it took a week to find them, but they did survive!

Natural disasters are getting more common and more lethal by the day, and people are still debating whether climate change is a thing or not
Sadly, it is my generation that could have aborted this train wreck. Instead, money spoke more loudly than the Earth. Or consciences. Or reason.

The Earth whispers. Until she opens her mouth and roars.

The first few years Greece crazy wildfires, the call to evacuate was given too late. Last, and especially this year, they have been more on top of things, sending evacuation messages quite early, giving people a good amount of time to evacuate. This still wouldn't work if a fire starts near us, but if not, we have some time to prepare.

If only we were more equipped to deal with the fire...

Eventually your area should get better and faster and predicting when and where the fires are headed. Fires can break out fast and hard, one always has time to bolt out but not necessarily with everything they want to save. And many times its during the night which is always more difficult. We've learned to just expect fires every year now. We've fire proofed our property as best we can trimming trees, removing underbrush and things that will feed fire. All we can do is hope its enough for any future fires that come through here.
