I am looking for a LGD pup to watch over my chickens and goats. Does anyone know where I could find a good one?

Pet sales are prohibited on Craigslist and your average ad flagger doesn't distinguish between working dogs and pet dogs, so it would be very unlikely to find a good LGD on Craigslist. You can find always find nice pups out of working parents in the Livestock Weekly classifieds section. Most of these will be out of are hard working, active guard dogs protecting sheep and goats from all the things that go howl and growl in the night. The most common breeds found there are Pyrenees, Anatolians, Akbash, and mixes thereof.

Here is the website: www.livestockweekly.com Click on the "Classifieds" button on the left and they will be under the "Dogs" section.
You don't have to be a subscriber to see the classified ads.

I found an ad on craigslist. It says both parents are registered, just not the pups, (they didn't want to spend the money) They are Great Pyrenees for 150$ what do you think, good price? I'm waiting for pictures, I'm thinking of getting it the pups are 4 months, is this a good age to start them. If I get I want to start obedience classes right away. Oh one more thing I have 2 other dogs (if that's what you want to call them) will they be alright with other dogs on the property?

On the registration, to me that doesn't mean much. If you want to show or breed, I guess registrations helps but it really doesn't ensure a quality dog - it is just proof of the dog's bloodline. Lack of registration does mean the price should be lower though, so I actually see that as an advantage

I am a complete novice when it comes to LGD's, having had mine just 15 days (I got her in response to a fox attack and she is 16 months old). I would think that 4 months is a good age in terms of being able to bond with the poultry and learn its job. On the other hand, I know several people who either currently are or have recently been through the puppy stage with their Great Pyrenees and it seems like some days they wanted to pull their hair out and others they would happily trad their pups for just about anything else. You have the usual puppy behavior but it is in dogs that are already large and are outdoors, so you can't be with them constantly. GP's go through a kleptomaniac stage from about 4-9 months where they drag home anything they consider a great find, to add to their treasure pile. That can cause frustration and anger, depending on what the dog deems to be a treasure (in one case it was shoes).

As for adding a LGD to existing dogs, I have two other dogs - both mutts from rescues who are in the 40-50lb range. One is only 4 months older than my LGD. The LGD at 16 months still has enough puppy in her that they have a great time playing together and everyone assured me that its fine to let them play. Even though the LGD is a working dog, socialization with other dogs is still important. And she had no problem getting along with them either. I think it helps that she was coming into their "territory". It might not have been as easy if we already had the LGD and tried to bring in two other dogs. As it is, the smallest of the three is the most dominant and the 100lb LGD will give up her food if the 37lb dog requires it of her.

That price sounds fine

I think 4 months is probably fine, I got mine at 14 weeks and he did great.

LGD's were never meant to "guard " poultry.

You can get just as good results with a rescued mix breed dog , and with fewer problems

LGD's are meant for people with LIVESTOCK and fences, not free ranging birds
