lice, mites or what? AHHH

just posted this on another thread. but i to use adams. spray on back of neck, under each wing, and on vent. get below/underneath the feathers. if there are an accumalation of mites on vent feathers. yu will have to take scissors and cut the feathrs and mass off, best get down to bare skin. shave her whole butt. wont hurt her any. spray 2 or three squirts of adams.

great stuff and works for a long period of time.

oh yeah...all fowl have lice and mites. period.

No, all fowl do not have lice and/or mites, but they are all susceptible. Some areas have it worse than others, and a lot will depend on wild birds, and how infested they are or are not, and how much access they have to a flock.

I've experienced chicken lice for the first time in my poultry raisin' , I freaked. Out of 19 birds only 1 had them! I used a garden dust with pyrethrins, it also had sulfur and copper sulfates. I bought at the local lowes it's just plain ole ortho 'garden dust'. I used this after some checking on line and calling our poultry management on parasites at Auburn University. We all so made a dust bath using it in the mix. Good luck, and know they are bothering you more than the chickens. Having little children is hard to know what is safe for them, but I wouldn't let them play with them until after the 2nd treatment.

If it is WARM - - -like summer days - - and you use adams then you can use their dip. Mix it up in a 5 gallon buck or bigger. Dip the bird right up to their neck. It gets to the skin much better than the spray and NO NEED TO CLIP FEATHERS. . .

HOWEVER, I would not use the dip now because it does take 6 - 8 hours for the bird to dry completely . . .

good point ..........if you do dip them, you can add a bit of dish detergent...the soap helps clean and also helps the "dip" adhesive to their skin and feathers better. dipping is a good way just to clean them up periodically. using just waters.

Yup, we had Northern Fowl mites. And from what I understand (and experienced) they live on the bird. Nasty things. Tried permethrin poultry dust (totally worthless, it didn't stick to the birds at all and didn't kill anything), a few different lice human-shampoos (recommendations, but turned out to be another waste of time) and DE (obviously didn't work; seeing a pattern here?

) But eventually, we tried Sevin and had great results. Dusted the vent, abdoment, under wings, base of wings, neck and head. Then re-dusted 7-10 days later.

Thanks for all the advice. I am totally grossed out again since I was giving my 3 year old daughter a bath and picked a louse off of her hair!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not be more disgusted than I am right now. I am ready to get rid of all the chickens ESPECIALLY the new silkie and throw the coop off a cliff. Chicken lice in my house is where I draw the line. We were playing outside with the chickens for a minute and she held one (not the infested silkie) and then we went for a walk. And then we came home and had a bath. It was on her for that long. I checked the whole rest of her head for 20 minutes and found nothing - but I have been itching ever since. Want some chickens and a coop? I am considering dropping them off at the animal shelter. AHHHHH.

Agree, what have you used to treat the birds? Most of the products mentioned will kill the bugs very rapidly, and while not long-term residual, should still be effective 3 days later.

There is also the possibility that your dauhter acquired human lice at preschool or at a friend's house or ... Head lice and children are very common together.
