Crowing
Personally from trial and error now in my pen I just make sure there is deep dirt (no fertilizer, no rocks), in a couple of spots. Big spots. To me 14 ins is too small. Gotta be a foot deep and maybe 3 ft wide so a couple hens can get in there together...dust bathing is an important social event for hens. It takes some trial and error to determine what they like. My hens don’t go in their coop except to sleep and lay eggs. Has to be where they hang out during the day.Good to know I will look up what to look for. Regarding dust bath, I have 14 inch diameter round metal pan about 3 inches deep with dry dirt and diatomaceous earth mix. Is that sufficient for 4 chickens? I am adding 4 more now. So I would have 8 total but up until yesterday I had that pan out for 4 of them. I also do a deep littering method in the coop and I regularly sprinkle diatomaceous earth in that to keep bugs out.
What’s your set up?
Whatever you do, gotta keep the dust bath dry during the winter.
