Diatomaceous Earth is great for a lot. We also use it in the garden for pest control. We use it on the ground where the chickens droppings are for fly control and it helps dry up the "stuff" and break it down faster. Our main use in the coop is for smell and control over the droppings under the roosting area, but the bonus is it also keeps the very idea of mites/lice and anything else at bay.
Can even be used in a dog run or yard after cleanup, plus will help with fleas in the grass (just don't mow after dusting with it, it would blow all over in your face!!!). Some people have mentioned litter box use, although our cats are inside outside and do not use a box, but I would not be above finding their convenient poop spots and using it after cleanup.
