I had not used it through the winter, and it was stored on top of my coop. I use galvanized waterers to put on heated bases for the winter.

This is the one I am talking about:

When I went to fill it now that the frost has gone, I could not get a vacuum and I saw a crack in the black handle. I have never hung this waterer and I have also not extensively carried it by the handle while full. I think it either froze and cracked or the last time I screwed it on I used a bit too much force.

So my question is: Can this be repaired? Husband seems to think that we might patch it up with superglue but I'm not sure that it would withstand the torque of screwing the lid on and off. How about duck tape?

Before you all start writing about nipple waterers or bucket waterers, I tried all of those and do not like them for various reasons. I am pretty much sold on this type of waterer. I'm not really looking for a discussion on alternative watering systems.

Chances are there always was a flaw in the plastic, and it just gave out. The super glue may hold a while if you can completely seal it. Duck Tape could seal it. Not knowing where the crack is and the stress it goes under when turn it I can't say how long that will hold up. You could try welding it by melting the plastic around the crack. I think however that the flaw, and if there wasn't one before there is one now, will keep causing it to crack. So how much do you want to play around with it?

You might check with the company online and see if they sell parts. I have a similar waterer, and i think you can buy O-rings and other parts. Some people are always removing the extra caps thinking there are supposed to be 2 on them, then the store ends up with a waterer with no small cap.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought a new one for now, because I need it for my chickens. I will check online to see if I can get just a lid. THen I would have a spare waterer which is never a bad thing.

I think I'll not even attempt to repair the broken lid.
