Life Cycle - Lice

Today we washed Wilfred and used both oil and hair conditioner to try to remove the lice egg/"glue" buildup. No luck it barely softened. We then carefully cut off as much as we could.

Re-applied Permethrin and dryed him. He is a very calm and tranquil bird.
Good thing he's mellow!

Not sure the oil works instantaneously.
Think your just supposed to oil the egg clusters and leave it there to soak in and suffocate the eggs/larva.

DUH🥳

Makes sense for sure. I worry about having him wet and equated oil as "wet" but more likely acts to retain heat and protect the skin/feathers? Our temperatures still go below freezing.

We noted a second "issue". His claws are overgrown, long; on a hard surface his toes twist; tip of one broke during handling.

Could this indicate him being kept in a cage?

Are the chunks of egg clusters all gone too?

We cut and trimmed the egg clusters as much as was possible two weeks ago. Since then we have focused on looking for lice.

I did not go back and apply oil on any remaining egg bits so expect that some remain. I will have a closer look and report back.

Wilfred just after he was sprayed for 4th time. Inside house in front of wood stove, lit of course.
