My light brahma, Appa, laid her first egg at 21 weeks and it was a cute little perfect thing!!! I'm so proud of her! She laid every other day consistently and we got 3 lovely little eggs. Then she stopped laying for 2 days and suddenly we got a huge egg! Then she went back to her normal schedule of laying every other day and it was back to a small egg again - still perfect and beautiful! :) I mentioned this to a friend and she asked if Appa was the only one laying and as far as we know, she is... but perhaps the big egg could have been from one of our buff orpingtons? But we've never seen any of them in the nesting box and we always figured Appa would be the first to lay.... Has anyone ever had a chicken lay small eggs and then one random large egg? The color was not the same as her last egg before that but I understand eggs will not always be the same shade of color from the same chicken... I'm completely new to chickens so I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!

When you crack it you will probably find that the large egg is a double yolked egg. It's pretty common for a pullet just starting to lay to accidentally release two yolks at once instead of the standard one. It's also pretty common when that happens that they skip a day laying.

She should soon gain better control of that egg making process.

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense. :) I was shocked when I saw the size of the egg and wasn't sure it was hers, but what you said makes perfect sense. :)
