My Black Australorps lay a variety of light brown eggs and one even has a light purple tint to it. I’ve never gotten a dark egg from one. I agree that those dark ones look like they come from a Maran.Would the dark chicken (black australop) be the one to lay the dark eggs?

Could they possibly be Midnight Majesty Marans? That’s a hybrid sold by Hoover’s Hatchery. I think other hatcheries call theirs by similar names like Mystic Marans. Maybe they got mixed up with the Australorps.
The Midnight Majesty Marans I had were all black with clean legs. Now, with the breed description they give on the website, you wouldn’t expect that. But there have been several new breeds/hybrids from Czechoslovakia that aren’t turning out exactly as they are described. I don’t think they are telling the whole truth about what goes into them. Anyway, my two didn’t live long enough to lay eggs, but there is a thread for them here on BYC and other people have gotten real dark brown eggs from theirs.no brown leakage what so ever and no feathered legs.....
