Light Brahmas all hens right?!

Would the dark chicken (black australop) be the one to lay the dark eggs?

My Black Australorps lay a variety of light brown eggs and one even has a light purple tint to it. I’ve never gotten a dark egg from one. I agree that those dark ones look like they come from a Maran.

so that’s why I’m so confused because I don’t have any Marans!!?! I have some mixed breeds but none are black. So who the heck could be laying these dark eggs?

Marans come in many different colors. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them were part Marans. Try swirling food dye on the vents if your hens, and see Wich one lays the egg.

Could they possibly be Midnight Majesty Marans? That’s a hybrid sold by Hoover’s Hatchery. I think other hatcheries call theirs by similar names like Mystic Marans. Maybe they got mixed up with the Australorps.

The Midnight Majesty Marans I had were all black with clean legs. Now, with the breed description they give on the website, you wouldn’t expect that. But there have been several new breeds/hybrids from Czechoslovakia that aren’t turning out exactly as they are described. I don’t think they are telling the whole truth about what goes into them. Anyway, my two didn’t live long enough to lay eggs, but there is a thread for them here on BYC and other people have gotten real dark brown eggs from theirs.
