Hi Friends-

I have what was a very healthy 1yr old Buff Laced Polish Hen that all of a sudden has little brown spots, kind of crusty on her wattles. They look nothing like pox images I have seen. T

hey are small and light brown. Her wattles also look paler than usual. Other than that, she is acting normal, eating, drinking, and laying regularly. I checked for mites in her crest and by her vent (since that is one of the places all my books said to look), and I found nothing. I am stumped, but I already lost a chicken earlier this year (ringworm and an accompanying parasite - the rest of the flock were not infected), and I don't want to lose another lady. Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you checked in the coop at night? There are mites that only come out at night and they hide during the day and attack the birds as they are roosting.

Yes, I did earlier tonight. I went in with a flashlight and a white piece of paper. I looked and swiped under and over every roost and surface. No smears. Nothing. I also checked vents and under feathers. Nothing. Which is good I guess. I did do a SUPER power clean after I lost my hen (sadly, the cream legbar in my profile picture) a few months ago. It's good to know the coop isn't harboring anything, but it really leaves me stumped about Sir Chix and her pale and scabbed wattle.
