Watch the hackle feathers as they develop. A female Sussex will have rounded ends to the hackle feathers. A male will have pointed ends to the hackle feathers.

Yeahhhh that’s what I was worried about... thanks for your input!Ya, your buff is a crossbred. And likely a cockerel with that much comb already. Those legs are the dead give away that its a crossbred, wrong color for a Sussex.
My Buckeyes pullets have enormous feet as chicks.A heavy breed pullet can have some pretty stout legs. Wait for the comb to sprout (or not) over the next few weeks.
And just for giggles, let me show you my dear Agnes. This pullet chick was 4 weeks of age when I took these pics and I took them because her legs were RIDICULOUSLY thick. Not to worry, she laid plenty of pretty blue eggs.
