Light & buff Sussex

Watch the hackle feathers as they develop. A female Sussex will have rounded ends to the hackle feathers. A male will have pointed ends to the hackle feathers.
Best,
Karen

An update- cos they’re cute!

No black lacing coming around the neck at all, whereas the light Sussex has heaps!

Ya, your buff is a crossbred. And likely a cockerel with that much comb already. Those legs are the dead give away that its a crossbred, wrong color for a Sussex.

Update - grown heaps!
Definitely very green legs, and absolutely no black neck feathers, so much for buff Sussex! Some black tips to ends of wing feathers. Comb is much bigger than the light Sussex, will be interesting to see what she (or he!!!! :( time will tell) ends up like. Approx 8 weeks old, not 100% sure how old they were when we got them.

A heavy breed pullet can have some pretty stout legs. Wait for the comb to sprout (or not) over the next few weeks.

And just for giggles, let me show you my dear Agnes. This pullet chick was 4 weeks of age when I took these pics and I took them because her legs were RIDICULOUSLY thick. Not to worry, she laid plenty of pretty blue eggs.

My Buckeyes pullets have enormous feet as chicks.
