They also say it's ok to eat certain kinds of fish. I guess bioaccumulation only happens in big fish and not humans [spoken sarcastically].

we had mercury tilt switches in school. we had to be so carefull with them and we made a hot glue cacoon to protect them and us. But yea just think of all the other bad substances we are putting in our landfills. Batteries, some electronics (all that lead and nasty chemicals) light bulbs. its sad. SEPERATE PEOPLE its not that hard. The only problem is that its expensive to dispose of these things. But atleast your car batter is recycled and thats usually free of charge.

I have seen people have fluorescent bulb fights, where they break them over each other's heads, and they sometimes do it on wrestling shows. Many janitorial workers routinely break them into bits to put them in the trash.
Heck, there are so many bad things in the air we breathe everyday, that it is enough to make you want to live in a plastic (which also releases toxins in the air) bubble. Thanx for the info, but at this point, on this earth, it is almost moot!!

No offense to you but I reckon we should all just lay down and die if we go by what you suggest in your comment.

Again no offense but that's a strange way to look at things. This world is screwed so let's all screw it up more?

thoes light bulbs are still better than incadesents.... they save more polution they they put out. (I have no source for that better check) If you want ot live in a clean house make sure to make it out of glass. (havent heard anything bad about glass yet) but since we cant do that yet we just got to live.

So what are we to do about all of the florescent bulbs in our homes and businesses?

By the way, I've been around many many of these when they have been broken and even had the misfortune to breathe it, but never got sick. Worst that happened was once when I broke a light with a forklift mast and the glass dust got in my eyes, mouth and throat.

Is there an alternative? Saving energy is pretty important. So is the environment. What's a person to do?

Like I said this is an informational thread and not a debate. Do what you will with the info.

But Mercury is NOT good for the environment when it's leaking into the ground and into water sources. No not all people recycle and that's is soooooooo messed up so how do we fix this?

Raise awareness on recycling? How do we do that? People just don't care...period.

I wasn't trying to debate with you Southern, I was trying to get more information. Are there any other articles you have read other than this one that may give some suggestions on what we should do about the problem?
