Light sussex can they be kept in a run not free range my
run is 20ft x 8ft for 9 birds
cheers Phil

Do they also have a coop to go into? The run is plenty big enough for 9 birds and as long as they have a good safe place to roost and lay then they will be fine.

I have heard sussex make more noise than other chickens is this true
Cheers Phil

is this true

Hi Phil,
No, I never found it to be true they were noisy when I had my Light Sussex. You have plenty of room for more birds. You need 4 sq. feet per bird in the house if they will be cooped for extended times during foul weather. Otherwise, 3 sq. ft. per bird is plenty if they are just sleeping in the coop. 10 sq. ft. per bird in the yard. One nest box per 5 hens. ( 1/2 all of the numbers if you ever get bantams). Speckled Sussex do come in Bantams. The Overton and Skytop bantam strains are excellent.)
You are good to go. Enjoy your Sussex, I know I sure enjoyed mine!
Best,
Karen

What are chickens classed as when in a permanent run as there not free range?
