I hadnt given it much thought, but 90 percent of the crushed stone you will find around here is calcium carbonate. There is a very large quarry centrally located along the main highway that runs north and south in vt.my duck coop is leveled up with it, and I intend to put it around their pond when it goes in to keep mud holes to a minimum. I have noticed them all picking at it on occasion, at first I figured it’s just grit so whatever, now I’m wondering if my drake or non laying hens are getting something more than they need or should haven’t all.. or if this isn't a concern at all. Anyone have any insight?

By the sounds of that article I have cause for concern, I have no idea how much, if any dolomite may be in the crushed stone that I know my birds have been picking at. it says that will take months to show up. My dump truck is in for repairs for the next week or so, not sure what to do about it other than cover it up until I can bring in a load of something else. I have moved the pool away from it and that seems to have focused their attention elsewhere and I can’t say I have seen them give it much interest lately. 😕
I sure hope I haven’t just killed my whole flock.
