There are possibly the following things it could be: an injury, a disease process like an infection or a congenital defect. I think a vet might be the most efficient at telling what’s wrong.
If a vet is not an immediate possibility, wrapping the joint gently, isolating him away from other chickens, keeping him quiet and possibly giving him a baby aspirin for pain might help him out.
I have little runt pullet that has something like with her leg. I did have her isolated and gave her aspirin for pain. The swelling went down in her leg and she’s hopping and flying along with the flock. In fact she hangs out with the naughtiest chicken, Argentina, I think hers is congenital.
