Hi all
My favourite White Crested female duck, Bessie, started limping all of a sudden 6 days ago. I'm quite confused as to what's happening, so I will describe the whole situation.
I have 5 ducks total: 3 females 2 drakes and some 12 chickens. The drakes are quite aggressive and try to mate with my hens as well. I have 2 hens that all of a sudden started limping very badly a few months ago. I separated them, but they never recovered. The rest of the hens are perfectly fine.
One of my female ducks is much older, around 10 years old. She started limping a couple of years ago, but it came on and was progressing slowly. I first checked for bumble foot, but couldn't find anything wrong with her foot. She has never recovered despite me making changes in her diet. I'm feeding my ducks and chickens Organic Baby Chick Starter (Purina). Ever since my older duck started limping, I'm adding some boiled, cut up beef to their feed and sprinkle it with brewers yeast (brand photo below). I've always been buying brewers yeast meant for human consumption. I have only learned today, that it's also produced for poultry. Duh...
Coming back to Bessie, The first day she wasn't limping too bad, so I separated the drakes, as I thought it was their fault. The next day she stopped putting any weight on that leg. I took her to a vet. After almost $400 I've learned that the foot is not broken and there are no fractures. The leg is swollen in a joint. As per vet it's either damage to soft tissue or infection. I left her in a large cage for a couple of days (and was gone for the weekend). I let her out of the cage last night - she is still not using her leg! I put her in the pond, and she cleaned herself, but got out quite quickly.
I have just taken photos of her legs - the good one, and two photos of the bad one. Now I think this may be bumble foot. Should I give her antibiotics? Is the brewers yeast I have good enough? I didn't give them any for the past couple of months, because I ran out and couldn't get any. Should I give vitamin B instead? I'm guessing I should buy something that's for animals, and not humans. I have Nature Made super B-complex at home, but I looked and it contains Vitamin C as well. Can I crush it and give her that as well? What exactly is the dosage?
Thank you all.
