Hi! The past week or two my pet runner duck has began limping. It came quite suddenly so we think she maybe fell down the ramp from her bedroom being pushed by her duck sisters.
she is a white runner duck and 5 years old. I heard they live until around 14 years so she’s still quite young.
We’ve examined her and there is no redness / swelling / bumblefoot. Legs and hips feel fine I can’t seem to feel any abnormalities. But a week or so on and she is still limping, and after a few minutes of standing will sit down.

Has anyone else with runner ducks find they get leg issues more easily than other ducks? Any ideas what else it may be? And how I can help her?
Of course if it persists we will go to the vets but with the pandemic and covid 19 rife we are trying to stay away from this if we can. I’m quite worried about stressing out our already nervous duck too as she is one of the least friendly.
Thankyou

I have a 4 yr old Runner limping. After examining her I also don’t find any cause. But I have a sneaky suspicion it’s their running down the hill at 90mile an hr that did it. So she is resting and not running up an down the hill with everyone else. She has access to pool time which is also good therapy since it relieves pressure and helps keep muscles moving. Some BComplex in her drinking water to help with muscle health. Main thing is rest just like when we injure a muscle rest is the best healer it’s the same for our ducks. Last time one of my Runners was limping it took close to a month before she was not.

I’ve dealt with very this with my runners! I actually suspect leaving them to heal on their own is best, however when I dealt with it I used epsom salt baths. There’s a ton on the internet, but basically you fill a bin with warm water and about a scoop full of Epsom salts. Hold them in the bath (just the legs!) for about 10 minutes. When you’re done pour the bath out somewhere they can’t get to it, since it will cause tummy issues. You can also make an epsom salt poultice. However! I really think this is only a good idea if it doesn’t cause too much distress for your duck. Some really enjoy it, but if you have got chase him down and wrestle him in then just let it heal on it’s own.
