Limping?

My 24 Week old Buff Orpington started limping a couple days ago. I looked at her foot and leg and it seemed that her middle toe joint nearest the foot was a little bigger than the other one. Today, she started limping more when running, but she's still putting weight on it.

What could this be caused by? It doesn't look like she has a cut or scab on it. What can I do to help her?

I can think of two things. First it could be an injury to the joint, causing the swelling. It will heal faster if you can put the bird in one of those cradles for a week or so. It could also be the start of bumblefoot which is usually caused by an open wound that gets infected. Based on your examination, you'll be better able to see what you need for treatment.

Check the bottom of her feet for a black scab, if you see one, it's bumblefoot.

They also have something that is called a "Chick Chair" that is like the cradle I'm thinking of. You just make it large enough for your particular hen.
