I am going to stick up for Drumstick here. I have Autism, OCD, ADD, and other type obsessive issues in my kids from their father's side and she is right. I have been dealing with Autism related issues in work, volunteering, or my own family life for over 25 years now. Many times people pass off little things like this as quirks..only to find that when they get help later from the quirks getting bigger and bigger..and out of hand.... it is much harder to conquer.

There is no way in this world I would let my kid obsess over eating a marshmallow. I would be bringing peeps home everyday and eating them right in front of him, reminding him it is a marshmallow and nothing more...he may kick, scream, fight..but I guarantee you over time..he will get over this issue. My son had an issue with chipped paint in kids cereal bowls..and for over a year..that is exactly what he was given to eat out of...and now he has no issues with it...now he knows..it is only chipped paint and cannot cause him harm. when a new OCD behavior creeps in, HE has the control, NOT the OCD. Sometimes it is easier than others..but he knows he has the power now to overcome.

The best OCD therapists out there will tell their patients to do exactly what they are afraid of. It is a marshmallow. With the other comments the parent mentioned about home schooling and the child not wanting to go to college..yes, I have that too..my children HATED public school and want to be with me..and they are on the spectrum as well. Brilliant, off the charts testing kids..but quirky.

It may be cute that a 9 year old is so "quirky" about this..but honestly..this does show there could be something else going on.

Take the advice or not..it may mean something or not..but I too know what hell we have gone thru and I won't let ridicule block me from stating it either. I commend Drumstick for putting themselves out there to be ridiculed and yelled out because they know it and hate to see other families ignore symptoms becuase they don't know it is in fact a symptom.

Only one problem with that, he is NOT going to grad school. He says he will only go to college if it is at home.

I will never get to eat another Peep.

Bah! He says that now. Wait until he discovers girls, dancing, parties, girls, booze, girls, and girls. He'll forget about Peeps and parents and think... "Which college is far enough away that mom can't just pop over at any time, yet close enough that I can take my dirty clothes home so she can wash them?"

I dought it! He is pretty set in his ways and with AS he will probably ALWAYS be at home, but that is okay. One day I will get to eat my Peeps again, maybe even dipped in chocolate.

Just send the chocolate to Amy in Utah, express mail and you won't have a problem anymore!!! LOL!

I went to Wal-Mart after Easter and stocked up on chocolate Easter bunnies, the solid one, not the best chocolate (Palmer I think) but they are all in my freezer and when I need a chocolate fix, I just snap off a piece of the bunny. Oh, I also got a BUNCH of chocolate coverd marshmallow bunnies, their in the freezer too.

Hi, not offended.

Our son has Asperger's Syndrome and this type of thing bothers him so signicantly (sp??) that he will go into a major meltdown. There have been other things in the past that done pretty much the same thing, but he is getting better with those other things, so hopefully in the NEAR future, he will be okay with the Peeps too.

I don't beleive in medicating children, so we just deal with the issues. I am with him 24/7 and I know him, inside and out and I know whay works and what doesn't with him, so we just try to introduce things little by little and help him see why we can do some things and not others (biting off the head of a marshmallow peep vs that of a real live chick). Not to say that he would do that, but he feels that is what is happening.

Again, not offended.

Maybe you can save the head for last.

Just bite off the body and put the head back in the package.
