Linebreeding

kfacres,

Your interpretation of my previous statement backwards. To paraphrase my statement, line-breeding does the same thing as stabilizing selection. It conserves variability of founding idividual so long as that individual is bred back to with potential of multiple generations of breeding back to that individual. As soon as that individual drops from breeding pool and is replaced by a decendent, some alleles are lost which has same affect as classical inbreeding. Continued breeding to that individual this preserves variation within that individual until it is in turn retired.

I didn't think you were against line-breeding, I wanted to see your answer.
Now, if you wasn't trying to be sarcastic you would have see I wrought, "Ive been Line-breeding my fowl for about 8 years now" and the key word being Ive (or I).
The Line that I am talking about has been Line-bred a lot longer than 8 years, more closer to 20 between me and the previous breeder.

Chris.

Awesome, in every format.. what breed is this you are refering to?

centrarchid maybe next time you'll speak in english then.?? and I must add, you had better have one tremendous individual to breed (only) with for four or more generations-- which I suspect highly easlily done in chicken breeding programs..

Are you keeping accurate pedigree and performance information, or are you just a closed flock that keeps the best of the best each year and then mates them together.

I supposed, it would be very hard to keep extremely accurate pedigrees on chickens in general, unless you had the hens seperated to know which eggs come from which hens... either that, or keep an entire flock of full siblings

It is a closed flock, or has been for the last 23 years. May do a limited outcross this year as fertility wasn't what I'm used to. I keep accurate records of pedigree by a system of toe punching & banding. Performance really isn't a concern as this is a bantam flock. That said I do cull females that don't lay 150+ eggs per year.

I have had to resort to a combination of colored leg and numbered wing banding. Leg band indicates line from distance and number indicates individual.

Pretty much what I do except I use coloured & numbered leg bands rather than wing bands.
