Okay, so I'm out cleaning coops. I changed the hay in all the boxes except one. My buff orp was in it at the time with my Jersey Giant waiting below. About 30 minutes later I went back out to collect the egg and change it. This time My JG was in, I had a light Brahma waiting below, and my other buff orp was standing just outside the coop! It looked just like they were all waiting in line. I gave up, went inside, and later collected 4 eggs! There are about 18 different boxes in 3 coops, but they have to all lay in the same one!

Nice!

Try putting some fake eggs in the other boxes. The hens may think that is the only safe one, since it is the only one being used!! LOL!

They do swap around. Each day it could be a different box. They do seem to have 3 or 4 favorite boxes and the rest are just wall decoration! You think wallpaper and curtains might help?

If you really want to mess with them, move the fake eggs around. I have a couple of pullets that will ONLY lay the box with the fake eggs. We play musical boxes.

Mine do the same thing - there's one box for laying, one for pooping in (who knows why) and one for the black snake to rest in after stealing an egg or 2

I have the same issue, I have 7 nests and there are 2 that they wait in line for. I have fake eggs in all of them as some of my girls are just starting to lay. I actually think one of my chickens holds her eggs in until she gets let out of the coop. I found a nest she built in the people part. I left her in the chicken part extra long today and when I finally let her out, she ran to her corner like her tail was on fire. Sure enough 1 egg in her nest.
I have this mental picture of her with her legs crossed muttering under her breath "please let me out, gotta go, gotta go, can't wait much longer".
