List Your Projects Here

I always have something going on as far as breeding goes. I got some legbars this year that I plan to outcross to get a more leghorn looking legbar. I would like to try to work on legbar bantams if I can get my hands on some birds to use. Then working on a crele farm bird. I have the first generation growing right now.
In addition to the crele birds, we will be working on some mixes to use in sexlink making. Not sure what the end product will look like, but if it goes as planned, we will have a good red line and a good silver line that we'll cross for sexlinks. We made some this year that should lay green eggs but well be working on making the two seperate lines. And there are other projects in my mind and on paper that I want to work on over the next few years, time and space allowing

Hi everyone! I finally had some time today to take some photographs of some of my babydoll cochins. The tiny black chick in the front is a "Baby Doll" Birchen Cochin. It is pictured next to a blue cochin bantam that is a normal sized bantam cochin chick. This is one of 3 that has hatched, and my incubator is full and looking good! The blue spool of thread is a normal sized spool of thread, so that you can see how tiny they are. They are 7 days old today. This is so much fun to be able to share my project with you all. I hope you injoy seeing my Baby Dolls!
Hi, I am so glad you started this thread.

I was thinking about starting a thread like this myself, a few days ago. I was almost afraid to! So may people have harsh remarks about "project birds" that it can be discouraging to try to share your joy. The fact is, that if it were not for "project birds", we would probably all own jungle fowl!

I have been working on a project now for 3 years. You might have seen where I posted about it. I seriously love cochins and I love miniature things, so I decided to create a miniature cochin breed. I call them "Baby Doll Cochins" My first pure bred generation hatched this past Friday. The F3 generation roosters weigh 22 ounces and the hens weigh about 16 to 20 ounces. The chicks that I hatched are so tiny. I am guessing that the adult birds will be smaller than that. I am working on finished birchen cochins, and I have already started several other colors. I will have blue, mottled, white and calico in about 3 more years. I think the possibilities are endless. They are really strong little cutie bugs too!
I have already got several people interested in helping me work to get the breed recognized.

I have had some problems with my camera, and I should be getting it back this week. I have an old camera, and I have to download the pics to my old computer and then e-mail the pictures to myself so that I can post them. I will be getting that fixed this week and I will post some pictures so that I can share them here if you would like to see them. I will be working toward developing a standard for them, and maybe one day they will become a recognized breed.
That is my goal, however, even if they are not recognized I don't care, because they are so cute that I think they will be a big hit with cochin lovers.

I love seeing about other peoples projects too! You all have some super ideas. Projects are fun!
Sincerely, Bunny

My project was to create an American version of the Swedish Flower Hen in the US. This was before they were available over here, of course! Greenfire imported them a while after I started the project. There is still a TON of variables within the breed, so there is a lot of work to be done getting the legs the same color, and improving size (as the neat colors came from an odd sport Bantam of unknown breeding) but it's coming along nicely.

I like the fact that there are new colors that differ from what you see in the Swedish Flowers that are currently in the US. For example, this is a photo of Swedish Flower Hens, posted on "Feathersite.com". So far, I haven't seen any Swedish Flowers in the US that look like these hens? (With this much white, I mean, or in that pattern.)

Above: Swedish Flowers (in Sweden)

Below: A project bird, "Aloha Chickens" - Hen in front is "Confetti" color:

I am also getting some new and exciting colors that aren't seen in Swedish Flowers at all, which is really neat! I'm very happy with progress, and while it's going to be at least two years before I can unveil a "true" Aloha Chicken that has all the traits, it's been a lot of fun and the birds are really beautiful.

Now I'm splitting off from Swedish and going a slightly different direction, but still related or a compliment to Swedish Flowers. Here's my page on the project with TONS of pics:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-aloha-chicken-project

End goal, is a nice farmyard or practical backyard dual-purpose chicken, healthy, vigorous, good layer. Just in crazy spotted colors and patterns.

What a lot of great projects here! ANd nice to see some photo's of results. I thin the Amarican Swedish flowers honour their name! And I'm so curious about how the baby doll cochins will look when they're mature. I saw there's another topic about projects too, so I'll have some catching up to do.

Have 3 projects in the works:

1) Working with a Blue Cochin roo and my black Australorp hens to produce a nice blue Aussie that continues to lay the nice large brown eggs
has the size of the Cochin
the smaller comb of the Cochin
the broodiness and motherly factor from the Cochin
the heat tolerance of the Australorp.

2) Working with a Blue Cochin roo and Wyandotte for similiar qualities

3) Crossing my Columbian Wyandotte and my Blue Wyandotte...working towards a Blue Columbian.

So far the F1 are 2 months old and we have blue and black offspring. The first photo also shows a Wyandotte/Cochin F1 and the Aussie/Cochin F1 in the Blue. The second photo is the Aussie/Cochin F1 in the black

This pictures shows both Aussie/Cochin F1 and Wyandottte/Cochin F1

These are great guys!

Jfer: Sounds like you have some interesting plans in the works, hush hush though they are. :)

WyTX: Wyandottes are such beautiful birds with such vivid colors and patterns. I'm excited to see what you do with them. Very neat on the Rhinelanders...I've seen a couple of people asking if we had them in the states, so there seems to be a lot of interest in them.

Heritage: Those sound like some fun color projects! Agreed, I think it is so neat for people to be breeding for traits they want to see. :D

Love those ducks Emily. I think I've seen some others of yours in another thread somewhere.

Monkeypoo: I looked up "crele". I didn't realize that was what that variety was called. I think it is extremely flashy and handsome!

Bunnymomma: Sooo cute!

Thanks so much for sharing a photo with us.

Aloha: I've been following your project thread, and have been loving it. I adore the variety of markings/colors they have coming in. These two have been my absolute favorites so far:

Wow Nana, ambitious projects you have going. I absolutely adore the birds in the first picture. Such lovely coloring!

NanaKat! I think you are on to something. I had some australorps last year that I adored. They are such sweeties to have on the farm. The combination you are working on looks like a winner to me.
Thank you so much for sharing! It takes real courage to post a project, at any stage. I have gotten a lot of good feedback about my "Baby Dolls", but I have also gotten some negative comments. Don't let any one discourage you from your project.
Good Luck and keep us posted!
