List Your Projects Here

What a great projects! And thank you for your kind comments. If there's anything you think off that I can do better otherwise, I would like to hear it too ofcourse.
Emily, that sounds like some work, but I thnink it's a good idea to use as little breeds as possible. If I could do thinks again (and ofcourse I can, but I just don't see the point in that right now...) i would narrow my gene pool down earlier on. I think you can get a result earlier that way and ofcourse you can always use another breed when you miss some certain qualities. And I've got a question: why the little combs? Because of wheather conditions or because you just like it or...?
BunnyMomma, I think it's spectacular what you do. They're tiny and I'm very curious what they look like. How did you do this? Did you use Pekings and Serama's or is it a mutation you're breeding in? And now I can understand why you're so hungry.... You're invited no problem, but I doubt one good meal makes it worthwhile to fly to The Netherlands for you ;-)

I want little facial feature to decrease heat loss. Floppy combs like SC leghorns get colder than the RC types. I am pondering about using RC Light Brown Leghorns in the project to get Rosecombs instead of trying to get little Single Combs.

These are awesome guys, thanks so much for sharing! They definitely seem like, in addition to filling a useful purpose for you, that they'll have a wider appeal too.

I also found out about a new breed from you, JK. I had not heard of Malines until you mentioned them. Really neat looking birds! I'm so interested to see how your project progresses. Dual purpose birds have always been really attractive to me, and faster growing birds would certainly be a plus.

Really interesting about the combs Emily, and sounds like they will be quite the lookers!

I agree completely Bunnymomma. Projects are fun! :D We've had some really neat ones documented on here, like the Aloha chickens. I'm not surprised at all to hear you already have a lot of interest in the mini-cochins...you definitely have piqued mine! They sound adorable, and like a great candidate for those wanting chickens where space is limited and neighbors have to be appeased.
PS: Would those be a bantam bantam cochin? XD

Hi, yes they are bantams, extra, extra small! So cute.
I'm in love with them.

I guess i will give a small detail to mine. =D But not the whole picture. I haven't started it, but i know exactly how i will do it and what i will be looking for and all that fun stuff. =) It will deal with bantam ameracauna's, silkies and one other breed im keeping secret. It will have about half the silkie traits, feathering included. =D The rest is a secret. LOL

I have two projects going on at this moment. I am unsure why I am taking the wraps off of them at this time but what the heck.

First one: I am working on a LF Red Wyandotte. Using a RC RIR and Buff Wyandotte cross. Shooting for the color and plumage of New Hampshires. So far so good, will see how the birds grow out this year. Very large birds that lay well.

Second: American Rhinelanders. Rhinelanders are a very prominent breed in Germany. They resemble RC Minorcas somewhat but have a red earlobe. I am working with a trio at the moment of that are a good starting point for this. The male is approximately the size of large Leghorn but has a RC and red earlobe. Tail is set like a Leghorn and the females absolutely lay like the dickens. SO they will be a Dual-Purpose RC Black, brown egg layer. Am hatching out a whole lot of them right now, so will see how they grow out also.

So cool sounding on the Rhinelander. Keep updates for us.

All the projects sound great and interesting. I appreciate all the options available and wish I could have a few of each type of chicken.

Maybe eventually I can.

Good idea.

I really like the color of New Hampshires and have a few myself. So the option of a chicken with a rose comb and medium red feathers is good to see.

About your project, what egg size do you think you'll end up with? Are both your RC RIRs and Buff Wyandottes laying large eggs? My Buff Wyandottes' eggs aren't quite up to large (2.0 oz) yet (at really close to a year old).

I'm actually happy with whatever a hen naturally lays for her breed (or physiology). An egg is an egg and tastes delicious no matter the size as far as I'm concerned. I'm just curious about what size you are hoping for or breeding for with you LF Red Wyandottes.

I would say their egg size is on the big end of medium and pushing large. My Buffs do not lay large eggs but grow out to be very large chickens, so I am not really too concerned with their egg size. They Buffs and the Reds both lay eggs that are slightly smaller than my Black Minorca eggs so I guess they are still decent size.
For right now with the Reds I am going to see how the plumage comes out on the birds I have hatched out this year. Right now the F1 males are pretty close to the color of good New Hampshires, just have to see if I can replicate it. The males coloring looks good but the females markings are non-descript and I would like more definition on those. All else fails in the future I might throw in some blood of those German New Hampshires to obtain the color genetics I am shooting for. Type is really good on all of the birds I have raised so far, so I might be daring and outcross to a New Hampshire next year just to see how it would improve.

As for the Rhinelanders, they might be the best laying chickens I have ever had. My two pullets lay at least 6 eggs a week right now and also I will say that the eggs are a dark brown(Not Marans dark but a dark tinted egg). I am impressed with their vigor and stature so far, will see how it goes with the next generation.
