listless and inactive 3 day old pullet :(

I am so sorry. You must be devastated!!! But you must not apply your experience with one bird to your general abilities, there was probably a problem long before you got her.

Thank you for your condolences. She passed in my hand this afternoon. She was such a cute little chick. No symptoms from the other Wyandotte yet. I'm hoping it was a failure to thrive and not a disease.

My hubby is on the way home with medicated feed just in case and a vitamin b gel recommended by the feed store. I don't know how I fell in love with these silly chickens but I'm determined not to lose another.

No, it just happens.... So sad when it does. We saw two die slowly last weeekend, because the chicks were a day late in the mail and too stressed. The 25 we got the week before had no problems. it's not you. Sometimes they are not strong enough for whatever reason, no matter what you do.
Now that we are on year two of chicken raising we see death as a part of life. I know this sounds a bit negative, but it really is not, just realistic. They are so darling and engaging that they really do capitivate us! But death happens with chicks/hens no matter how much you try. So not take this personally, it is the universe.

Erica;

A lot of people are posting similar things about dying chicks - I lost 6 the same way - they refused to eat or drink and then they went to sleep and passed legs straight out. I am wondering if there is a new little chicken bug or a new strain of something. My chicks hatch date was 6/14. They shipped on Tuesday from OHIO via MPC, I got them Thursday and lost them over Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. I fed the rest of the chicks yogurt and added Apple cidar vinagar to the water and some molassis. So far no more deaths. It is heart breaking.

Mine were vaccinated for mareks and I had them eating medicated crumbles.

I too lost a chick this time last week. She was 2 days old and seemed fine after the first scare but the next day she died in my hands while I was on the phone to My Pet Chicken. I felt the same as you, that I just wasn't cut out for this, that I might have done something wrong and oh my gosh, every time I check on them I'm a little afraid that I'm going to find another one weak and close to death.

I read a lot. There is a lot of help here on the forum. It helps to talk to people that love their chickens! So sorry to hear about losing your little one.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry!!

Unfortunately, a lot of times, no matter what you do they still pass. It could of been any number of internal issues. Don't beat yourself up about it, it happens to all of us. I had a perfectly healthy, happy 3 week old Welsummer chick that just toppled over and died right in front of me a couple months ago, it just happens sometimes. Love up on your other chicks, you're a great chicken mom!
