So, I start my chicks on several layers of paper towels, covering newspaper, in the brooder. I've been told to be cautious about how soon I switch to shavings, as the chicks might get confused and eat shavings rather than food. My chicks were a week old this past Wednesday, and I've had them, on daily changed paper towels a week tomorrow. Changing those paper towels everyday is getting old. When can I safely switch them to shavings??

We only left them on the paper over shavings for a few days. We sprinkled food on the floor around the feeder, then once they got the hang of eating we took away the floor food and the towels with it! If you see them eating out of the feeder then it's probably time!
