little chick having a hard time hatching but ma b still has yolk atach

Oh no! How is the little guy doing? I don't know what happened. The yellow thing was probably the yolk, still attached--it's supposed to disconnect from the bird before it hatches, but it doesn't always happen that way. Normally, the bird will absorb the yolk right after pipping. If it's bloody red, that means the bird's blood is still circulating through the yolk, I think--which is bad, I guess--but I don't know what to tell you. I think all you can do is watch and wait. I hope it turns out okay, or that someone with more experience has advice for you.

we had to leave and we just came back and the bloody thing is gone but he is still flopping around everywhere but i hope that is just because he is newly hatched

ok so i have a new question now i have 1 that pipped earlier yesterday and three other chicks have hatched and he hasnt made much progress. he broke the shell off in a pretty big spot but the membrane is still there. theres a little hole in the membrane that he just keeps sticking his beak up and down. why isnt this little chick zipping like the other chicks did? its like he doesnt kno how to get out cuz he just keeps sticking his beak in that 1 little hole...the humidity is at 67 but i forgot about raising the humidity the first day and as soon as i seen the pip i realized that and ran to the kitchen and got sponges and put them in there. could that be why???

ps:i havent helped any of them

I had a duck egg that did almost exactly what you are describing with that one. I think I waited about 24 hours after he made the largish hole before I helped. Then I helped.

I would take him out, give him a little water with my finger (which he drank thirstily), moisten the membrane, then with tweezers I broke away some of the shell in the same pattern he would have done himself. Then I set him back in the bator. I repeated that several times over several hours, each time only breaking away a small amount. Eventually, he was able to break out of the shell himself, pushing it open just as if he'd zipped it himself.

Anyway, I suspect your little guy is stuck to the membrane from the humidity dip at the beginning, and can't turn to zip the shell. He will probably need help, and may be fine after that.

The duck I helped was just fine, although he died of unknown causes about a week later--I don't think it was related, but you never know. It is true that sometimes babies that have trouble hatching have a defect of some sort, and that may have later led to his death. But I am glad I helped him--at least he got a shot at life, and he had one very lovely week with us.

I am no expert, but if it were me, I'd give him a few more hours and then try the method I just described (and do a google search & a search on these forums, and you'll find lots of pictures and tips that will help--that's what I did too). Just be sure to go slowly, so you don't risk too much blood loss.

hes made a bigger hole so im thinkin about just pullin that membrane back a lil bit to make sure he can breathe and if hes not out by tomorow ill actually help...................ok so i just pulled the open membrane back a lil bit and that part was dry:( i dont kno what to do it does look like he cant move around to zip around the egg though

i dont kno what to do this little guy insist on hatching but i think he still has yolk thats not obsorbed. i see yellow stuff comin out of the egg but im not sure if its poo or yolk. he is having such a hard time i can see his legs and his legs and part of his wings but he cant push the bottom apart to get out!!!!

How much of the shell is chipped away? Is the shell "zipped" now? Have you helped at all yet? I don't know what the yellowish liquid is, either--could be yolk, could be poo... If you do help him, you can leave him sitting part way in the shell to finish absorbing the yolk. As long as you don't encounter red blood (as opposed to dried-up blood) while working, he will probably be fine. I've read that as long as they've already made a hole in the shell, you can usually help them without hurting them. Just be careful as you work! If you come across red blood, stop working and put him back it the bator for an hour.

Keep us updated. I am hoping to go to bed soon, but I'll be anxious to check in tomorrow and see how the little guy is doing.

i really want to get him out im pretty sure he still has yolk attached but he is not comfortable in that shell and i dont want him to be strugling that hard just to die all cooped up like that...he has alot of the shell chiped away but he just didnt like zip around the egg like normal chicks...what should i do????please any advice helps
