Hi,
We bought 7 Black Australorps and a bunch of Freedom Rangers; this little “cuckoo” got mixed in w/the Rangers. I’m just curious to know if this is an egg layer or a meat chicken, and what type of chicken she is. Thanks!!

That's not a typical cuckoo pattern...

Maybe crested cream legbar? What type of comb? Which hatchery?
LOL, thanks for the update on the "cuckoo" pattern.

She's (I hope it's she!) is too little for a comb yet and I don't which hatchery she came from. I can find out. and I'll look up crested cream legbar (wow, what a name!)

Oh cool, we got another layer!! Thanks :)
To me... except for cornish cross... ALL chickens can be used for laying or meat... EVEN bantams. :drool

Lots of chicks have that chipmunk pattern and look at hatch. Easter Egger and Welsummer to name a couple. The CCL (cream crested legbar) is auto sexing at hatch and would lay blue eggs. Clues to look for... shank color (changes with age), ear lobe color, comb type (post a pic, we might be able to tell), feather pattern as it comes in.

Once you find out which hatchery they cam from it could rule in or out certain breeds if they don't carry them.

Cream Legbars are basically partridge cuckoo, aren’t they?

Also I agree, it definitely is not a meat chicken. It’s smaller than those Australorps, so it’s probably a lighter breed.

I’ll keep a eye on her as she grows up; thanks for the info. And I’ll try to find out what hatchery she comes from

I have 9 cream legbars... if that IS one, that’s a pullet.
My welsummer looks “similar” to the cream legbars.
Also Easter Eggers look similar....
I’m banding my chicks tomorrow because I’m tired of the game of “which one ARE you” when I quickly peek...
